Challenge Your Camera: #7 Bridges

I have quite a few followers who have photography fetishes, with doors especially, and more …… you know who you are! Well, it’s time to own up to my own fetish ….. photographically speaking …… it’s bridges. Large, small, steel, wood, ancient, modern, essential, decorative, railway, road, on foot, over calm rivers, raging torrents or a total void. I’ve photographed and been over most of them, many in my Himalayan mountaineering days, many in my current dotage visiting cities around the world. The challenge for the camera was always to find the right angle to show the purpose, the structure and other characteristics of the bridge. Here’s some of my own as examples and I hope it will inspire you to go out and find examples to #challengeyourcamera, though you will see a few below that challenged my nerves too!

Ancient Clapper bridge over River Leach, Eastleach, Gloucestershire, England
Wooden ladder bridge in the Solu Khumbu, Nepal ….. that’s me!
Plank bridge over a glacier crevasse on the slopes of Weissmes, Switzerland
Packhorse Bridge over Mosedale Beck, Wasdale Head, Cumbria, England.

Roll of Honour #6 Colour Splash

It seems like a lot of my “regulars” had a problem with last weeks challenge and fewer folks had a go, but thank you to all who tried. The colour splash technique can create some quite stunning images and there’s a whole community of colour splashers on Instagram if you enter hashtags like #coloursplash #redsplash #greensplash etc etc you will see lots of examples. Definitely a technique worth developing. Many apps ARE free but a lot depends on iOS vs Android and Microsoft vsMac as well as being feature dependent. I’m posting an “extra” tomorrow about coloursplash to help a little.

Each week I am selecting a single theme to point my camera at or display a few photos from my collection as a way to brighten up the week as we enter a new year which we all hope will be brighter than the last. If you would like to join me in #challengeyourcamera then here’s what to do:

1. Follow me to discover the weekly theme I have chosen.
2. Select a few photos related to the week’s theme
3. Post your own photos that week, any day you like.
4. Include a caption with each photo so we know what/where it is
5. Include a link to my blog in your post so that I am notified and can follow you back
5. Add a pingback/link to YOUR post in the comment section of MY post on that weeks theme.
6. Include the tag #challengeyourcamera

1. I will follow you back
2. I will encourage other posters to follow you
3. I will list each blogger in my weekly post in arrears

    • Hi and thank you for joining my challenge, I was scared crossing that plank bridge as there was about a 25metre drop below of blue ice. I’ve tried to comment on your site, but it won’t let me as I don’t have a Facebook or Google Drive account. Not sure what to do, it’s quite unusual to have someone joining us who is on blogspot rather than WordPress, but you are very welcome. I’m sure I’ll work it out 🤞🤞

  7. Although I confess to a bit of an obsession with photographing doors and windows, I agree bridges also make for great subject matter 🙂 I love all of your images, but especially the rich greens of the clapper bridge and packhorse bridge photos. With my poor sense of balance there is no way I would attempt to use the other two!!

For my first contribution to your challenge I’ve opted for some bridges in a city that is famous for them: https://www.toonsarah-travels.blog/newcastle-a-city-and-its-river/

I love the idea of ‘challenging my camera’ and hope to participate a lot now I’ve discovered you 😀

  9. Good evening Dr B,
I’ve so enjoyed your latest challenge although I didn’t realise just how often I photograph bridges.
I’ve chosen 21, with a kind of chronology to them. Apologises that I get bogged down with the facts behind the images. Anyway, here they are:

Am enjoying your wine blogs too. We have a winery not too far from here – yes, in Snowdonia! Tempted to try it out. With family and friends in South Australia I’ve been fortunate to go on some wine tours in Clare Valley, Barossa, Hunter Valley, Coonawarra …
    Cheers!

    • Thank you, I’ve just done a reply and a question on your blog. And, I think that writing something about each image is essential so thank you for that too. A lot of them I recognise.? Great to find another wine fan, do please visit them and post about it, I’d be very interested 🍷🍷🍷👍

  10. Since I am not sure if my earlier comment made it through – my computer was confused about my login for some reason – I will post it again. I chose a modern bridge in Amsterdam. It is just one bridge but from three sides: https://teawithaninja.com/2021/02/17/challenge-your-camera-bridges/
    Thanks for the challenge!

  13. With zero technical skills, I have to ignore the ‘challenge your camera’ part of the title and just bombard you with bridges! 😅 😂Here’s my selection!

  14. The Nepal bridge shot looks unreal! I like the color counterpoint: shades of gray & brown contrasting with primary red & blue.

  15. Ok, there is no way I would have cooly walked across that bridge in Nepal, unless something was after me……. and then I would have fallen off it! I will be posting tomorrow after I go through my bridges!
